Make the Right Call. 2015 WFTDA Officiating Clinics.

WFTDA Officiating Clinics offer a two-day immersion into all things officiating, with both classroom and track time, culminating in a scrimmage that puts all of the skills into play. This year’s clinic cycle will offer new and updated educational materials, activities, and experiences designed to work with the WFTDA’s latest Rules, Stats Workbook, and Standard Practices of Flat Track Roller Derby. WFTDA Officiating Clinics are designed with a focus on roller derby officials (Non-Skating and Skating Officials) but are open to skaters, coaches, and announcers, regardless of affiliation or certification.

The WFTDA will waive the registration fee for Level 4 and Level 5 WFTDA-Certified Officials.

For Non-Skating Officials (NSOs)

• NSOs will be provided with training and practical application of WFTDA Rules, Standard Practices, the Game Stats Workbook, and Officiating Skills Assessments.
• NSOs will engage in classroom discussions and activities covering topics like sports officiating psychology, game management, specifics on working each job within positional families, rules and procedures Q&A, and the road to tournaments.
• Veteran NSOs will have the opportunity to participate in breakout session to consider higher order operations such as tournament officiating, consistency among peers, and officiating techniques for the highest level of play.

For Skating Officials

• Skating officials will be provided training and practical application of WFTDA Rules, Standard Practices, and Officiating Skills Assessments.
• Skating officials will engage in classroom discussions and activities covering topics like sports officiating psychology, positional theory, Initiation/Impact, game management, rules and procedures Q&A, and the road to tournaments.
• Skating officials will be presented a number of skating drills designed specifically to master the skills needed to properly officiate modern roller derby.
• Veteran Skating Officials will have the opportunity to take part in breakout sessions to fortify skating skills and discuss theory related to higher order considerations including advanced positioning, consistency among peers, and officiating techniques for the highest level of play.

For Skaters, Coaches, and Announcers

While the WFTDA Officiating Clinics are designed to provide officials with the tools and resources needed to officiate modern roller derby, getting to know and understand the officials’ side of the sport can be extremely valuable for skaters, coaches, and roller derby announcers. We recognize that many skaters and coaches also officiate for their league and play a part in recruiting and training officials. A deep understanding of the rules and their application by a broad spectrum of individuals in the roller derby community benefits the sport as a whole.

• Attendees will gain knowledge of rules, theory and application – as understood by officials.
• Attendees will be exposed to Officiating Skills Assessments and the rigors of WFTDA Certification in order to be better positioned to evaluate officials and help them seek Certification.
• By being exposed to the language, communication, and procedures of officials, attendees will be able to better negotiate interactions with officials and better able to describe roller derby action.
• Attendees will be exposed to the skating drills and positional theory used by officials, including skating drills and techniques that skating officials need to master.
